North of Koreatown, in the Melrose Hill neighborhood, on a block of Western Avenue traditionally dedicated to furniture stores, a new buzz has been taking place for the past few months with the arrival of established New York art galleries.
After the opening of the Morán Morán gallery in 2021, last February saw the opening of Sargent’s Daughters X Shrine, a New Yorker contemporary art gallery that was born from the collaboration between Allegra La Viola, founder of Sargent’s Daughters in the Lower East Side in 2014, and Scott Odgen, founder of Shrine gallery.
A craze for arts in Los Angeles that reached its peak on Tuesday night with more than 800 people who came to attend the opening of the new David Zwirner art gallery.
The event, open to the general public, drew large crowds and celebrities of fashion and art mixed, such as the designer Nicola Formichetti and the gallery owner Jeffrey Deitch, all of whom came to celebrate the opening of the fifth David Zwirner art gallery after New York, Hong Kong, Paris and London. A gallery divided into two buildings, former furniture showrooms, with a bookstore and soon a third exhibition space.
It is in this effervescent context of art and creativity that the Co brand inaugurated the same evening, a new space entitled ‘Co on Western’ at 622 N Western Avenue. A space occupying the storefront of Co’s headquarters company and built as an extension of the luxury fashion label Co presenting collectible 20th-century and contemporary furniture and design, as well as fashion collections.
Founded in 2011 by Stephanie Danan, a former movie producer, and Justin Kern, a former screenwriter and producer, Co was initially focused on resort collections before becoming a californian-parisian stylish and feminine brand thought for working and creative women.
In the past, Co has already done intimate trunks shows, pop up at the Montecito Country Mart, private appointments at the Schindler and Neutra house showroom, but never opened a proper store.
Until now, Co brand has been developing mainly online and wholesale and still distribute its collections in 100 stockists with a presence at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Elyse Walker and Forty Five Ten. Designer Danan is also now located in Paris where she designs the new collections.
Inside Co on Western, visitors will find an Otto Schulz sofa, a pair of chairs created by George Nakashima, the dishes of Japanese ceramist You Hirose, and the latest collection from Co. Among the pieces that stand out: a long short sleeve dress in cotton poplin, a classic single button blazer jacket in plaid virgin wool, a long trench and a slit skirt in crinkled cotton.
