Scoring a highly coveted invitation to the 2023 Met Gala, the black-tie fundraiser for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute—which made the first Monday in May a red-letter day—is only half the battle for the fashionable set. It’s here in the corridors of the largest art museum in the Americas that fashion history is taught, preserved, and made. From celebrities linking arms with talented designers and sauntering up the storied red-carpet-covered stairs of The Met to attendees rubbing elbows with some of the world’s most stylish individuals, the Met Gala creates its own kind of magic.

But while all of the evening’s guests go to great lengths to impress, the Met Gala 2023 is affectionately referred to as “fashion’s biggest night” for a reason. It’s here that the spotlight shines extra bright and extraordinary design comes to life, be it from luxury fashion houses or up-and-coming talent. With the Costume Institute’s spring 2023 exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” highlighting the late designer’s acclaimed work at Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his eponymous label, Karl Lagerfeld, the Met Gala 2023 red-carpet fashion paid homage to the man and his illustrious 65-year career in fashion, giving attendees plenty of room for interpretation.
