The Oscars 2023 strayed from tradition and laid out an off-white carpet instead of a red one. They were calling it a “champagne” carpet, and nothing is a more classic pairing with bubbly than citrus—namely orange juice. It’s fairly unusual to see orange on the red carpet, but this year it was a surprising trend. Janelle Monáe wore a striking and slinky orange silk skirt with a black bustier by Vera Wang, Salma Hayek wore an eye-catching sequined Gucci gown, and Sandra Oh went for a Giambattista Valli Couture gown in a more naturalistic tangerine. Lemon yellows from Banshees of Inisherin nominee Kerry Condon and Winnie Harlow, along with lime greens from Fan Bingbing and Sabrina Dhowre Elba round out a carpet that showed off the variety of citrus tones you might see on a lush fruit stand.
